Intertoto Cup 2003
Villarreal’s second excursion into Europe came in 2003 in the Intertoto Cup. The Yellows campaign started in the third round with the visit of Italian side Brescia. A 2-0 win for the home side followed by a 1-1 draw in the return leg put Villarreal into the semi-finals.
 This saw the Submarine matched against Brno of the Czech Republic where a 1-1 draw away in the first leg was followed by a comfortable 2-0 victory at the Madrigal and Villarreal’s first European final.
In the final the Yellows met Dutch side Heerenven. A 1-2 victory obtained away in the first leg was sufficient to earn Villarreal its first title after the second leg finished goalless. An unforgettable night for the Submarine who had earned its place in the UEFA Cup.
