Intertoto Cup 2004
Villarreal’s second European trophy came via the Intertoto Cup in 2004. The Yellows entered the competition against Odense cruising through after wins both away (0-3) and at El Madrigal (2-0).
Spartak Moscow was to be the Yellows third round opponent. The Russians also went down to a superior Yellow outfit, losing 1-0 at El Madrigal, before sharing four goals in the second leg in Russia.
 Germany’s Hamburg was the opponent in the semi-final, with Villarreal with the Yellows coming out on top by the only goal of the game in both clashes.
The final was contested by two Spanish sides: Villarreal and Atlético Madrid. Despite going down 2-0 in the first leg, the Yellows turned the tables on Atlético in the return clash before finally winning 3-1 on penalties.
